Design and price – the two words you will definitely not miss out from Paulinians when asked about the newly implemented St. Paul University Quezon City Wash day policy.
Many students in describing the infamous shirt the general term use the word ‘ugly’. The vice president for External, Executive Council Paulinian St. Paul Government, Ram Reyes said, “Panget daw yung design [The design is ugly]”. Others would not only complain about the design but also on the price of the shirt as really expensive. Jaymee Salazar, a BSA 2 student stressed out how costly the price is given the fact that the design is not something that is appealing. “Parang madaming OA sa checkered [The checkered part is over accentuated]”.
Not knowing the process it had to go through just for the policy to take place, the compliments are continuous. Even if the said Wash day project “started from the request of students” said Ms. Monina T. Bello, Dean of Student Affairs, the request of students are truly never ending. “Some said that during summer it’s hot to wear long sleeves so they requested that we’ll have a wash day shirt, said Maria Elsa Hufano, person in charge at Shoppe de Paul. Also, one reason as Reyes mentioned is that students have no time to wash their uniforms. Therefore, to solve these reasons which where put in a nutshell by the sisters, PSG and SAO, the solution was to implement the washday policy.
The spearheads, then, started to call in entries for the shirt design and was judged by the representatives of different sectors in the campus. An IT student was chosen as the winner and received a Php 3000 cash prize with the design having “five core values and the Paulinian identity”, Reyes said. He added that the original winner was not actually the present titlist but rather another student with a black and white design. “But then again nakita ni sister yung design na yun, pinakita niya sa convent tapos ayun yung napili.”
Hufano described the washday shirt precisely and said, “the color itself, the green and gold really tells us about the Paulinian idea.” She even put an emphasis on the talked about checkered included in the design that “When you see the logo it gives a brand mark that it’s from St. Paul.”
Over all Hufano stated that the image of St. Paul QC has been interconnected with the terms, “elite, classy and elegance”. This, therefore, is present on the washday shirt that everyone seems to not like. Additionally, Hufano explained the over the top pricing of the shirts. “The pricing strategy: you have to add additional price because you need additional materials” she clarified.
In general, Bello concluded that, “I’m sure iba iba ang preferences natin. It’s just like saying in the guidelines ng contest: “the decision of the judges is final”.
